Lisa RichartHernandez
Hi, welcome back to living in Charleston Podcast. I'm Lisa Richart-Hernandez. Today we're going to talk about all of the restaurants in Mount Pleasant. We've got a great show for you. So stay tuned.

intro
Welcome to Living in Charleston podcast with your host, Lisa Richard Hernandez, a fun loving Charleston resident for over 25 years and a full time real estate agent with her pulse on everything Charleston, from where to live, to where to eat, what to do, where to tour, and who is who about living life in the low country of Charleston, South Carolina.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Hi, Friends, welcome back to living in Charleston podcast. I am so excited. We have a good little show for you today. I have my husband, George Hernandez here with us. And we are going to talk to you about all of the different restaurants in Mount Pleasant. We live in Mount Pleasant, and it is a suburb of the downtown Charleston area where a couple miles from the Isla Palm Beach. And we love to go out to eat. So I thought it would be a great podcast because I love to hear firsthand from people like what food is like and we are self acclaimed foodies, I would say. So. I just thought it would be a great show today. So welcome, George.

George
Hello. Thank you for having me on your show.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, so if you don't know George and I also do another podcast together called RView. And it's about her traveling adventures. So if you haven't listened to that, please do. I thought the best way to start with this because there's so many good restaurants in Charleston is to just basically, I just literally Google searched Mount Pleasant restaurants and came up with a list and thought, Alright, let's just go down this list because we've probably been to almost all of these restaurants at one point or another. We have our favorites. And we'll let you know what those are. But let's just let's just kind of give our little feedback or reviews or favorites at each place.

George
Let's do it. The list.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Okay, so the first one on the list was King Street Grill in Mount Pleasant, which is about a mile and a half from our house. And we go to King Street Grill at least two or three times a month.

George
Yeah, it's convenient. It's close to the house and it's good food. Yes.

Lisa RichartHernandez
So King Street Grill is a big sports bar type of restaurants. They have a one thing that I love on their menu there is especially now since I'm trying to be healthy is they have make your own salad so you can like choose what type of lettuce you want and you can choose all your ingredients. I love to get the buffalo grilled buffalo chicken salad with all the different toppings in there. They also have a really great buffalo wings. What are some of your favorite foods there?

George
They have a great Philly cheese steak. I typically that's what I get there. Their burgers are fantastic. It all their food is really good. However, it's bar food. Well, there's a restaurant but it's it's kind of bar food. There's it's not there's nothing fancy about it.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, I mean, it's definitely not fancy. It's a good sort of everyday place. Or

George
if you want to go have a good meal, watch a sporting event, have a beer. That's a great place. They have probably 50 TVs around the whole restaurant.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, and they have but they have a huge menu too. They also have like grilled chicken, you can get that or pastas. And it's a million different kinds of sandwiches. Right? It's

George
a perfect in between place. So it's not a little dive restaurant bar. And it's not a fancy bar right for

Lisa RichartHernandez
fancy family. There are a lot for it there. You know that kids love it. Okay, so that's about enough about King Street Grill. Burton's grill and Bar Mount Pleasant that's over also about two miles from us. And that's located in the town center, which is the shopping center that's in Mount Pleasant. Burton's grill, one of my favorite things. There was a long period of time where I was gluten free. They have an excellent gluten free menu. It's like a whole entire separate menu. They're very gluten friendly. As a matter of fact, they also have on their menu, some paleo things, a lot of healthy options if you want to choose those. But they also have some other regular entrees. And I would say this is would you say a little more of a step up from King Street Grill? Oh, absolutely.

George
Yeah, yeah, they're more of a restaurant than a bar. Correct. Where Young Street is more of a bar than a restaurant? I would say that makes sense. Yeah,

Lisa RichartHernandez
although there's a lot of seating King Street Grill. Burton's is has more of a feel of a restaurant. And it's there's no TVs and that kind of learns as a restaurant. Yeah, in Burton's house, actually does. I mean, a lot of people that go in to have dinner instead at the bar at Burton's we do that a lot of times, yeah, if great craft cocktails,

George
a great Sangria Yeah,

Lisa RichartHernandez
the they have like a different fresh fish every day and I love that. But option is usually over some different type of risotto. That's very good.

George
That's like my Mediterranean chicken that I always got. That's so good. Oh, yeah, it's got the artichoke chicken and

Lisa RichartHernandez
I think that might be over zotoh also Soto Yeah, yeah. And I think they're their menu changes a little bit. So they have a 4.5 rating on on Google, I love to see what Google ratings are because I really stock those and pay attention to them, especially when we're traveling. So having someone like if you're coming into visit from out of town, I feel like having somebody to kind of give you a second opinion of those that has kind of a high opinion of where to eat I think is good.

George
And that's a nice place conveniently located good food. Yeah, it's

Lisa RichartHernandez
more on the pricey end, I would say it's like on a little bit higher, like two of us could probably spend $80 on dinner there with a cocktail. Oh, easy. Yep, yep. Okay, crave kitchen and cocktails. That's, it's also about a mile and a half from our house. These are all are places that we go like,

George
well, very conveniently located to restaurants. He does

Lisa RichartHernandez
crave kitchen and cocktails is right off the islands connector. So if you're staying out at the beach or while dunes and you want to get off the island, crave as a great little spot. It's in another shopping center over by the target. And there's a Harris Teeter grocery store there. And a lot of just little shops. They do have a nice outdoor seating area. So if it's a beautiful day, I love to go to crave and sit outside. They have brunch, great brunch, co hungry. They're serving sizes are huge. They have award winning macaroni and cheese.

George
Yes. And their burgers are incredible. Also.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yes. Yeah. They have. I would say they're a little bit more upscale. Also, not not really a bar, definitely a restaurant. I would sit we go in and sometimes and sit at the bar and eat there. But I would go there for like I want to go sit outside. It's a beautiful day. I think they have mimosas and all kinds of stuff for brunch.

George
Bottomless mimosas.

Lisa RichartHernandez
I feel like they do but I'm not 100% Sure. Don't quote us on that. Yeah, we haven't. Um, things change on their menus and stuff like that. But definitely, highly recommend crave. It's got a 4.3 on Google reviews, but I would say it's still pretty good option very, very good food. Yeah. Tsunami Japanese restaurant is also about a mile from our house. I would say this is just, um, it's got a 4.1 google rating, I would say is an average. It's not my favorite place. Yeah, I mean, it's okay. It's that's all I have to say about tsunami.

George
I would almost say chain ish sushi. Yeah, yeah, it's not my favorite. We and I say

Lisa RichartHernandez
abaci there but it's not like a hibachi table where you get like sit around and watch the guy cook it they just got that

George
in our house and I got you to cook it. Yeah, right. Right, right.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Okay, next on the list is Seoul in Mount Pleasant, which is again about a mile and a half from my house. These are all our places that we go all the time. Seoul is like a Tex Mex. Would you say our max it's supposed to be like yes, Southern. Definitely. Tex Mex. Yeah. So they have really I think they're margaritas are hit or miss for me like some depends on the the bartender they use too much lime juice.

George
It's always super sour to me. I always have to add simple syrup to it. It's just Yeah,

Lisa RichartHernandez
yeah. So heads up on now they but they do have like some really creative craft cocktails there. They have like a jalapeno. Margarita. They have like prickly pear one. They their their their cocktail menu changes but it's always the same for me like there needs a balance of sugar in with the with the sour to me. People think the common misconception is this drink is really sweet or sour. And what it really needs is sugar to balance out the acid and a lot of people think no, no but more sugar will make it too sweet but that's not really that tastes better. So that's our pro tip there if you're going to go to Seoul, but I got to tell you so as one of my favorite healthy meals, it is a woodfired or they have a really delicious salmon there which I'm really sketchy about getting salmon at a restaurant so I would say this is easily a good recommendation for a woodfired salmon that's delicious over there grilled vegetables that are also wood fired and my other one I think I don't know if it's a sea bass or I can't remember what kind of I think it's a sea bass. They might have changed the fish. Anyways. It's a mild white fish that they have like woodfire grilled and with a slightly spicy seasoning. They put a little bit of a sort of a pineapple li salsa on it with vegetables and my other favorite thing they have there is the grilled sweet potato fries. They they're just they're not fries. They're wedges of sweet potato that have been like woodfire grilled you can see the grill marks on there and then they put some sort of sweet. I don't know maybe maple type of

George
some kind of delicious sweetness, but

Lisa RichartHernandez
that's one of my favorite places to go for things that are healthy. Their tacos

George
are very, very good. That's one of my favorite places for tacos.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, they have those tuna lollipops for an appetizer that are really good. So it's not like your typical like Mexican restaurant where you're just going to get like chips and salsa and like combination of combination number three, it's it's more of a restaurant. They also have a nice outdoor dining area. Good place to meet up for friends with for cocktails and some just appetizers if you want to do that. Really do enjoy it, Seoul, the next one on the list. And Seoul has a 4.4 right now on Google ratings. So

George
that's good for them. I

Lisa RichartHernandez
believe in two. Yeah. Toast all day is also about a mile and a half from us. It's a breakfast place. They have only a 4.2. I would say the reason is that is because their service has gone down a little bit. I know they've been really struggling trying to get staff to stay. I think every restaurant struggling to have Yeah, I think unfortunately some of these ratings have gone down mostly because of the staffing. But they have really good breakfast. Really, and they breakfast all day.

George
I think their breakfast is there.

Lisa RichartHernandez
They're keeping bread

George
and butter. No. Yeah.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah. We haven't really eaten a lot of dinner. They're mostly we go there for breakfast because they do serve breakfast all day long. They have gigantic biscuits. They're biscuits a really good almost ridiculous. Yeah, they have great Bloody Marys. And oh, I like the crab and shrimp omelet that they make. They're very, very good. Yeah, that's what I would get in. Apparently, the crab cakes Benedict are really good. I don't eat runny eggs. But everybody likes the crab cakes Benedict there, too.

George
I've had the regular benefics and they are very, very good.

Lisa RichartHernandez
And the next one on the list is the mustard seed.

George
Well, what was their writing? I missed it.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Oh, toast all day is rated at 4.2 on Google. Okay. Yeah, fair enough. Yep. So the mustard seed. We haven't been there in forever.

George
Yeah, we need to put that on our to go to List. Yeah, they

Lisa RichartHernandez
have a 4.6 ratings, so they must be doing really well. And I used I mean, the mustard seed used to be one of my very, very favorite restaurants. And I guess because it's now like, four miles away. We have to pass outside of our comfort zone. Yeah, we had to pass all these other ones first to get to the mustard seed. But I remember the pad tie, there was probably one of my favorite pad ties that I've ever had. They're not really like a Thai restaurant or anything like that. They just, it's just one of the things on their menu. That was really good that I remember always ordering the same thing.

George
Good Italian food to them.

Lisa RichartHernandez
And they um, I don't think it's really Italian. They have some pasta dishes. They have some sandwiches, sort of a mix of things. Salads, they had a really good salad. So I would highly recommend the mustard seed. But they have two locations or three. I don't know how many they have now. They used to have one over on James Island. That was the original one. Yes. And then they opened the one in Mount Pleasant. So it's on chalk dolly Boulevard in Mount Pleasant. And that's kind of in Chuck dolly sort of runs between 17 and and Coleman Boulevard. So let me look see what we're going through. There's some of these other ones. We haven't been to San Miguel Mexican Grill and bar. We haven't been to Tokyo Bistro, wasabi of Mount Pleasant. We do like wasabi. That's an Oakland market. That is where we like to go for sushi. Generally they have a really good happy hour and good specials there. They also have an outdoor seating area. Very. It's a little bit smaller, I would say.

George
That's a decent size. Probably like sit at the sushi. Yeah,

Lisa RichartHernandez
we said at the sushi bar there. I would say the sushi is good. Very good. Yeah, it's

George
better than the other place. Yeah. And I like the way they break it up because they have a actual sushi bar. And then they have a bar that you can buy sushi. Seating like a normal restaurant. Yeah. So I kind of like that because Lisa and I a lot of times like to sit right where they're making the sushi and watch them and you know, it's kind of like a show.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Right. Right. And so I would say its competitor would be tsunami and we would choose probably wasabi over a tsunami. Oh, absolutely. Yeah, yep. Yep. And they have a four 4.2 rating on Google ratings. Grimaldi's pizza is the next one that's also in town center about a mile and a half from us. And we hadn't been to Grimaldi's in like we never tried it as long as we lived here and then we went and realize they actually have really good beats. That's like a New York style pizza.

George
Pretty close. It's it's good pizza, then intercross Yeah, service was really good. Like Lisa said, we haven't been there in a while. So

Lisa RichartHernandez
yeah, it's more of like a they have good salad. It's kind of like stop in like a lunchtime sort of Pizza Pizza. Pizza Town Center. It's a it's a place to go. I'm just looking at Great Wall is the next one on this list which is our go to pick up Chinese food. It only has a 3.8 rating, which poor Greatwall I think their food is actually decent for

George
food it's really hard I mean we always get it when we want Chinese.

Lisa RichartHernandez
When we want Chinese takeout we go to great wall. They have huge portions. When I live by myself years ago I used to get great wall 90 off that like one on trade off for like three days.

George
I think the problem with that great wall is pretty much completely a takeout. They do have some seating in there. Yeah, but when you do take out there's always somebody complaining about something. Yeah. That affects your rating all the time.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, sure that we've got PF Changs, which is, you know, just a chain restaurant. I don't think we need to say more about that their lettuce wraps are good. It's in town center. Also.

George
Good food, the kids like go in there. It's a fun, fun experience. And the food's always good.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah. Oh is always kitchen. That's also a chain, but I love to get Zoe's kitchen and order the family meal. And we get that to pick up. And you can order online. And it makes us I mean, for I think like 40 or 50 bucks, you can get like a family meal for that feed six people and be completely satisfied.

George
That one's a good yes, for family meals. Or if you're having some kind of get together with

Lisa RichartHernandez
a hearing or something. And you need a quick, I usually get like the cavas where you can get like chicken steak or shrimp and it's another healthy choice, which I really, really I do like yeah, no and the food is very good. And that's a chain so you know people from out of town may already know as always kitchen isn't that not might not be where you want to be targeted at. But if you've just moved to the area and you're looking for a quick place to like get a family dinner and not have to buy groceries. That's a great takeout family meal place. You can order it online and pick it up. graze. We haven't been a grazing so long they have a 4.6 rating. It's on Houston Northcutt, which is right near the base of the Mount Pleasant bridge. So it kind of across from Whole Foods. And that in the shopping center there. Gray's house a lot of like, I think their menu changes up a little bit. They've got a thing from Korean tacos to salad and a grilled cheese and kind of a bunch of different things.

George
It's a very interesting menu. They really they do a good job and eclectic as

Lisa RichartHernandez
well. Yes. Yeah. And it's just really good. It's in a strip mall, but there's usually really full it's not a huge restaurant. Very small bar in there. But

George
but you can sit at the bar and you could sit at the Barney mat a few times.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah. Oh, locals, locals in Mount Pleasant. It's a 4.5 rating and that probably I would have to say is my favorite sushi place.

George
That's the best sushi place.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yes. And it's not an Asian restaurant. It's a bar and a bar and a restaurant. Our friend owns it. We um His name is Jocelyn we we know him from that. On Mondays. They have Buy One Get One Free sushi and it's Mondays, right?

George
I believe so it is so packed.

Lisa RichartHernandez
I mean like packed because everybody loves her buy one get one sushi. Sometimes they have live music they have like a patio out back. You can sit out back you can sit in the front and the main bar. If you can find a seat at the bar you can sit in one of their two bars.

George
It's a very well designed restaurant.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, they have a they have a bunch of different really good sushi. One of my other favorite things that's not sushi they do is these asparagus wraps. So it's like asparagus wrapped in like Philemon yawn and then there's like some kind of like little like thinly sliced jalapeno on top and some sort of sauce. Oh,

George
yes, things are so

Lisa RichartHernandez
good. I could eat like just those appetizers. There's a good my mouth started watering when he started talking about it. And

George
if you like sushi, their roles are huge.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, and a huge variety of them and they have a bunch of different award winning ones. So I highly recommend locals if you're an locals is really off the beaten path like you. You almost have to be local to find it. It's in the public shopping center. It's on Queensboro Boulevard. There's a bunch of like office buildings right there it's kind of tucked away some of you there's like a Chick fil A and a Publix and then if you go in the back row there you're kind of like pull around the corner be like oh there's locals

George
where they opening up another location on Long Point

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, but that's a different take on locals and I don't really know all the information but I don't think it's open

George
yet. We'll let you know once it open. Yeah,

Lisa RichartHernandez
I'm, I'm gonna totally mess the name of this up is the French Cafe in Seaside Farms. So vor dem owned. I don't know if that's how you pronounce it. It's French. But I love to go there and just get if you want little French sandwiches to go or their quiche is amazing. Also like the basics and their pastries, which I don't eat because I'm trying to eat healthy and there's a lot there. Other pastries are incredible. They look delicious. But we do get the little sandwiches there. And there. I was like, they have amazing little BLT they can get like turkey or ham and cheese, little sandwiches good place to stop for coffee. It's

George
just a little quaint little place to stop in, grab a bite to eat. And they have a couple tables outside, which is nice. And you can it. It just has a really nice feel to it. Nice European feel to it sitting outside with the little finger sandwich and just enjoy the atmosphere.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, I feel like we could talk for hours on all the different restaurants in Mount Pleasant. So I want to just talk about I'm going to, I'm going to sort of skip forward to a couple of the ones that are other favorites that we haven't talked about yet. And then if you have any questions, I would love for you to reach out to us on our website, which is living in Charleston podcast.com. And ask us any questions because we love to answer foodie questions. And we've we've pretty much been everywhere. But I would say Langdon if I had to say my favorite Steakhouse in Mount Pleasant, I would say langtons. Yes, totally agree. And they have a fabulous steak. It's definitely the high end restaurant. Definitely recommend reservations there. Once again, this is also really off the beaten path. You almost have to be a local to find it. It's kind of in a back. Yeah, it's really hidden. But yeah, Laird and worth the CERT is the steakhouse. Yes, that you would definitely want to find.

George
And their cocktails are really good too. They make a great Martini.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, well, if you judge it by their blue cheese, olives, stuffed Grey Goose martini, that's what you get. I think. Oh, and then I think we've talked about this before, but like Vickery is is one of our favorites, you know, on Shem Creek and just set out overlooking the water. If you're a tourist that's the place to go as a big huge menu. Your favorite things?

George
Yes, the best Cuban sandwiches in town.

Lisa RichartHernandez
So the Cuban says it's a good Cuban sandwich. That means it's a good Cuban sandwich. Oh, my

George
dad said it was one of the best Cuban sandwiches he's ever had. So that's a big kudos for bakeries?

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yes, a couple other local restaurants is the biscuit place was the flying biscuit.

George
Well, there's two of them, we found out I'm biscuit in the angry biscuit, vicious,

Lisa RichartHernandez
vicious, vicious biscuit. Vicious biscuit is really good. If you're looking for a big breakfast and you are willing to eat carbohydrates. They do have protein bowl there. But the big thing is there. They got like a candied bacon. It's a good place when you're going for a big cheat meal, or

George
just what's a good place that cocktails, the only thing I didn't like is that you have to stand in line order your food and then they bring it to you including your cocktails. And then if you want another cocktail, you got to get back in line. And that's and there's always a line there bad planning on their part, I think. Yeah, it should almost have like a little bar so you can get another cocktail or waitress or something. Yes, that was a real big turnoff for me.

Lisa RichartHernandez
So if you were going to do breakfast, what would be your favorite breakfast place?

George
Oh, God.

Lisa RichartHernandez
I think one place that we haven't talked about is Acme it's actually on the Isle of Palms. And Acme serves breakfast everyday also, you really want to avoid it in the super busy. I wouldn't say that if you're here and being outdoors and you're staying out of the beach Acme on the ALA palms. There's going to be an hour wait for breakfast but it's well worth it in my opinion.

George
Well during tourist season, I'll upon is always busy. So

Lisa RichartHernandez
right so we like to go there all the time during the week, whatever.

George
I think Acme and toast would be my two breakfast breakfast places.

Lisa RichartHernandez
So Acme I'll tell you my favorite things. Pickled dill pickle vodka, martini or not Martini. Bloody Bloody Mary. Oh my god. So good. But you have to like pickles. And my favorite is the goat Island omelette, which is goat cheese, sausage and kale and an omelet. So delicious.

George
I like the eggs benedict. Very, very good.

Lisa RichartHernandez
And if you want to try shrimp and grits, that's the place to do it. They have like three or four different versions of it.

George
I think it's even award winning. Yeah. And it's a nice location right off the beach. Yeah, so if you're down there, go check them out.

Lisa RichartHernandez
Yeah, lunch places. I don't. There's a million lunch places. I would say Landon's would be my best Steakhouse. What about the

George
lunches just anywhere? Yeah. I mean, it's it's, you know what, what I like for lunch? Charleston sports pub. Yeah, believe it or not, because they have the best wings in town. They do. Charles Boyer. Yeah. And planting and seeding million TVs and services. Fantastic. Yeah, I mean, we go there. I go there with my buddies probably once a week at least. Yeah. So

Lisa RichartHernandez
I don't know where George is. He is at Charleston sports pub.

George
I got to change my routine.

Lisa RichartHernandez
